Chicago takes a more cultural approach to celebrating the Lunar New Year.
Besides the usual Chinatown parade (on Feb. 18), the city will have a series of lectures and demonstrations at the Chinese American Museum (including a deconstructed lion dance demonstration), a series of events at the Adler Planetarium, and a performance by the China National Symphony Orchestra.
In 2018, on the Western calendar, the start of the New Year falls on February 16th and is The Year of the Dog. During this important celebration in the Asian culture, it is traditional to wear red, meant to ward off evil spirits.
